East Side Community High School is a small progressive 6th-12th grade public school with high academic standards. East Side primarily serves students from Manhattan’s Lower East Side, but several students come from the Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, and other neighborhoods in Manhattan.
Classes at East Side are small, generally no more than 22 students, allowing teachers to provide intensive personalized instruction. We challenge our students to be active learners and critical thinkers. Pedagogy is based on the “student-as-worker, teacher-as-coach.” Curriculum is designed to develop students’ “habits of mind:” to make connections, develop and identify viewpoint, use evidence, and find relevance. Reading and writing skills are heavily emphasized across the curriculum. Student performance is rigorously assessed through a combination of tests, essays, and projects through which students authentically apply concepts and skills in real-world contexts. The goal of the school is to create a community of engaged, lifetime learners, who, upon graduation, will be prepared to succeed in college and the world of work. East Side strives to create a partnership among students, teachers, and families dedicated to respect for community, individual difference, non-violence, and equality for people of all races, genders, classes, and sexual orientation.
In addition to meeting New York State credit requirements for high school graduation, East Side students must successfully complete the school’s standard-based performance assessment requirements in Math, English, History, and Science. In order to graduate, students must complete a portfolio of specific assignments reflecting distinct content and skill areas in each discipline. These requirements include a historical research paper, a scientific investigation, a literary analysis, and a series of demonstrations of applied mathematics. Twice a year, students in all grades present and defend their work in each subject area to a committee of teachers, community members, and peers.
East Side Community High School is a member of the New York Performance Standards Consortium. As a member of the Consortium, East Side students have a waiver from four of the five the New York State Regents exams (students take the English Regents).
Advanced Placement: We offer two courses in AP English and AP Calculus
College Now: Some of our students take courses for college credit through CUNY
